Career in the Cyber Age
A fascinating meeting with Nadav Zafrir, Entrepreneur and Founder of the Team8 Start-Up
In February 2018 we've hosted another career-related event, this time with the alumnus of Coller School of Management, Nadav Zafrir, Entrepreneur and Founder of the Team8 Start-Up, Former Commander of Unit 8200 in the IDF, in which he spoke about career, military, technology and everything in between.
Zafrir addressed the difference between the army and the civilian world, and said that in the recent years, some 8200 graduates prefer to skip the academic studies stage and continue the sequence directly to establish their first startup. They should remember that there's a difference between working in the military and in civil life. In the military, everyone is on one front against the enemy, whereas in the civilian life the competition is broad and diverse in many different factors. In the military, motivation is universal and easier to channel it into one clear goal, and issues, such as money and intellectual property, aren't involved in the action. In civilian life, motivation is heterogeneous, diverse and of a commercial nature, and therefore usually more complex.
Nadav also conveyed the following message to academia: "It is important that academia in Israel constantly ask itself a few questions-is it standing on the same front as the world's leading universities? And is it changing fast enough in light of the crazy pace of change, both in terms of content and teaching methods? The academy in Israel has an opportunity to develop global leadership through developing strength and expertise in specific fields, 'pockets of technology', such as Machine Learning, and not necessarily through being good at everything".
