As Israel's national center for biodiversity and environmental research, the Steinhardt Museum advances the work of approximately 500 scientists from Israel and around the world, while welcoming more than 180,000 visitors each year, including alumni, families, and schoolchildren. The museum documents nature and identifies new species through the collection of specimens, professional field observations, and public participation. The extensive scientific knowledge generated through the museum's research supports numerous public authorities, government ministries, and organizations. Ecology and environmental science are among today's leading fields of international research. In addition, the museum has recently expanded into the field of citizen science, to engage the public in scientific research and strengthen society's connection to nature and the environment."
