Tel Aviv University

The conversation took place between:

Dr. Eyal Hulata – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Halman-Aldubi Technologies, Chief of Staff for National Security and National Security Advisor to the former Prime Minister of Israel, an alum of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Faculty of Exact Sciences.

Ido Aharoni – a former diplomat and New York consul (2010-2016), lecturer at Tel Aviv University and a consultant to global companies, an alumnus of David and Yolanda Katz Faculty of the Arts and the Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities.

The President of Tel Aviv University, Prof. Ariel Porat, gave opening remarks and said:

“Since the establishment of the State of Israel, it has been under one form or another of external threats. What changed was the internal threat that exists in Israel. Regardless of politics and the question of legal reform and revolution, we all agree that the existing divide in Israel isn’t as it was before”.

During the fascinating conversation, Dr. Hulata mentioned that “The region doesn’t only present threats to Israel, but also opportunities. Israel must prepare for the possibility that Iran will advance in its nuclear program, and continue to develop ties with the countries of the region for the benefit of all nations and the stability of the region”.

To that, Ido Aharoni added: “The State of Israel has never implemented real diplomacy of opportunity. Even diplomacy was mobilized in the national effort to identify threats. Thus, the background for Israel’s abandonment of the opportunity to diplomatically and internally influence the nuclear agreement can be understood.

Turning the Iranian issue into an internal-informational issue caused double damage. First, it created an international perception that Israel has the military and the diplomatic ability to stop the Iranians. And the other, worse, Israel freed the countries of the world (especially Europe) from moral and security responsibilities. The impression was created that Iran is a uniquely Israeli problem”.

At the end of the conversation, the two addressed the interesting questions asked by  the  alumni  from the audience, such as whether is there a chance that there will be an arrangement between us and Iran, how the Russia-Ukraine War affects the equation, and many more.

Among the alums who took part in the event were:

Michal Barak Nevo –Judge of the Magistrate’s court in Tel Aviv, former legal advisor of the investigations department at Israel Securities Authority.

Ilan Avital-Zorman - Chairman of NuTek Ltd.

Rutie Adar – Head of Samsung Israel’s Strategy and Innovation Center.

Alexander Lifshitz – Director, Ashtrom Industries Ltd.

Irit Savion Waidergorn – Director of MASHAV training, former ambassador, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel.

Zeev Kissin – CEO of Yaad Fuel Company Ltd.

And many others
